Sam Kelly


Sam was born in Manchester, brought up in Liverpool and spent three years in the Civil Service before training at LAMDA. Though probably best known to the British public for seminal roles as 'Bunny' Warren in the classic sitcom, "Porridge," and Captain Hans Gerring in long running favourite, "Allo Allo," Sam has over 93 credits in film and TV alone. He recently played Maggie Smith’s husband, Mr Docherty, in "Nanny Mcphee And The Big Bang," and has appeared in four Mike Leigh films: "A Running Jump," "Grown Ups," "All Or Nothing," and "Topsy Turvy." Other recent television includes; "Outnumbered," "My Family," and "Magic Grandad," for the BBC, and four series of "Barbara," that saw him nominated for the 2000 Midlands RTS Best Actor award. In the Theatre, Sam has worked for many of the UK’s most respected Directors over the years including Mike Leigh in his newest play "Grief," at the National Theatre, "The Female Of The Species," directed by Roger Michel, "The Homecoming" for Stephen Daldry, and "Under The Whaleback" and "Toast," both directed by Richard Wilson. He also recently enjoyed playing The Wizard in "Wicked" at the Apollo Theatre.
